How to Play 2048

Use your arrow keys (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles on the board. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their sum.

After every move a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty spot. Plan your moves carefully — the board fills up fast!

Reach the 2048 tile to win. After winning you can keep going to chase higher scores.

The game ends when no moves are left. There is no time limit, so take your time and think ahead.

History of 2048

2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 as a weekend project. Inspired by similar games like Threes! and 1024, Cirulli built and released it as open-source software in under two days. Within a week it had been played millions of times.

What made 2048 stand out was its elegant simplicity. The rules can be explained in a single sentence, yet mastering the game demands careful planning and spatial thinking. Its open-source nature also spawned hundreds of variants and clones across every platform.

Today 2048 is considered a modern classic of the casual puzzle genre. It is frequently cited in discussions of game design for demonstrating how a single, well-chosen mechanic can generate enormous depth and replayability.
