How to Play Letter Boxed
The puzzle is a square with three letters on each side. Click a letter to start a word, then click other letters to add to it. The only rule is that you can't use two letters from the same side back to back.
Every word has to be at least three letters long. Once you submit a word, the last letter becomes the first letter of your next word, so you're really building one long chain rather than a list of separate words.
The goal is to use every letter on the board at least once. You can reuse letters as many times as you need, but you win the moment all twelve have been used in a word.
Each puzzle has a par. Try to beat par, or at least match it. If you get stuck, the hint button in the found words panel will point you toward the next word in the shortest solution.
What Does Par Mean?
Par is the target number of words to aim for when solving a puzzle. It gives you a benchmark for how efficiently you solved the board. Finishing at or under par means you found a great path through the letters, but going over par is still a win, it just means there was a shorter route available.
Tips & Strategies for Letter Boxed
Start by finding your longest word
A single long word can clear out half the board in one move, which makes the rest of the puzzle much easier to finish in just a couple more words. Before you commit to anything, scan the board for the longest word you can spot and use that as your opening move.
Keep track of which letters are still unused
It's easy to lose track of one or two stray letters once you've used most of the board. Glance at the letters that are still their normal color and try to work them into your next word on purpose instead of hoping they show up by chance.
Plan your chain, not just your word
Since every word has to start with the last letter of the one before it, it helps to think a step ahead. Before you submit a word, check whether its last letter actually gives you a good option for your next move, or if it boxes you into a corner.
Don't be afraid to use short words to bridge gaps
You don't need every word to be impressive. A short three or four letter word that lands on the exact letter you need is often more useful than a longer word that leaves you stuck. Use the short words to connect your longer finds together.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Letter Boxed?
Letter Boxed is a word puzzle where twelve letters are arranged around the four sides of a square, three per side. You build words by connecting the letters, and your goal is to use all twelve letters using as few words as possible.
What makes a word valid?
A word needs to be at least three letters long, and it can't use two letters in a row from the same side of the square. Letters can be reused across different words, but each word still has to follow that same-side rule on its own.
How does the chain between words work?
The last letter of every word you submit becomes the required starting letter for your next word. So if your first word ends in E, your next word has to start with E. This is what turns the puzzle into one continuous chain instead of a random list of words.
What does the par number mean?
Par is the smallest number of words needed to use every letter on the board at least once. It's a target to aim for, not a hard limit. You can absolutely finish the puzzle in more words than par, it just means there was a shorter path available.
Is there a new Letter Boxed puzzle every day?
Yes! A new puzzle is published every day, and you can browse previous puzzles from the game menu if you want to go back and try one you missed.
